IVORY COAST Wooden Senoufo pulley with added plant fibers, with light dark brown patina on rubbed areas. H. 18.5 cm. Collected by Félix Fénéon in 1947, Paul Guillaume in 1965, Héléna Rubinstein in 1966, and Hubert Goldet, among others, weaving pulley stirrups never cease to fascinate. They cannot be solely confined, formally limited, to their function, linked to that of the weaver, to that of a simple support for the spool axle. The stirrup, surmounted and adorned by a figure, is a sculpture that is in no way necessary to the operation of the loom; only the bobbin is indispensable. Its role becomes aesthetic and ritualistic, as much as symbolic. The body of this schematized hornbill is square. Beneath the filled rectangular bust, a hollowed-out form reveals the spool on either side of the legs, here preserved, hammered, split in two by the thread that once ran through it. The long cylindrical neck is surmounted by an ogive-shaped face, the features delicately signified, fine linear scarifications slightly incised accentuate the gaze discreetly signified by circular shapes, the small plunging and curved nose that can be related to the beak of the hornbill bird. A crested headdress is announced by two incised lines. Very fine patina. Provenance : - Acquired probably on oral information from Galerie du Scorpion, Francine Bourla. - French private collection.
