Description

1850S-1860S EXCEPTIONAL AND RARE EMERALD CAMEO PENDANT The rectangular cameo on emerald is engraved with a profile of a young ephebe wearing a headband. It is contained in a pendant surrounded by rose-cut diamonds. The whole is enhanced by four scrolls in 18K yellow gold and brilliant cut diamonds (TA). Mounted in 18K rose gold. The back is hinged. Gross weight : 26,52 gr. Dimensions of the cameo : 18 x 15 x 8,5 mm. Dimensions of the pendant : 3,3 x 2,9 cm. The Apotheosis of the engraving on precious stone The art of emerald engraving requires unparalleled dexterity. This is due in particular to the fragile crystallization of the emerald with its "gardens" and its inclusions. It is absolutely necessary to handle the stylus and the magnifying glass to avoid the accidents. We can quote without being able to attribute it imperatively, the engraver Jean-Baptiste SALSOM (Sotckholm 1798 - Paris 1859) for this work which we present. He obtains, among other things, in 1855 at the Universal Exhibition a medal of 3rd class for engraving on fine stone and he is quoted for his works on emerald. Reference : Ernest BABELON, Catalogue des camées antiques et modernes de la Bibliothèque nationale, E.Leroux éditeur, Paris 1897. Diana SCARISBRICK, The Beverley collection of gems, PWP, London 2007. Ingrid S. WEBER, Engraved stones from the 18th to the 20th century from the Munich State Museum, DK, Munich 1995. An emerald cameo, diamond and 18K rose gold pendant. Circa 1850-1860. Gross weight : 26,52 gr. Cameo dimensions : 18 x 15 x 8,5 mm. Pendant dimensions : 3,3 x 2,9 cm.
