ESCUELA NAPOLITANA (1st THIRD C.17th / .) "The Martyrdom of St Stephen"

The present work could be a youthful work by Francesco De Rosa, known as Pacecco De Rosa (Naples, 1607 - 1656), when he collaborated with his stepfather Filippo Vitale (Naples, c. 1585 - 1650), imitating the latter's solutions in a naturalistic style, somewhere between Caravaggio and Ribera, around 1630. Later Pacceco's style became closer to that of Massimo Stanzione (Naples, 1585 - c. 1658), enriching and adding brilliance to his palette. We are grateful to Professor Nicola Spinosa for his help in cataloguing this lot. Oil on canvas. 96 x 131 cm
