FOLLOWER OF JOSÉ DE RIBERA ((C. 17th) / .) "St. Jerome penitent"

The present work, traditionally attributed to Juan Sariñena, is closely related to a "Penitent Saint Jerome" attributed to the painter José de Ribera which is in the Museo del Prado (P003119) and comes from the bequest of Juan Gómez de Molina y Elio, 2nd Marquis of Fontana. If Sariñena's authorship is ruled out on the grounds of style and technique, this painting should be attributed to the numerous followers of José de Ribera. One of them was Francisco Collantes, whose work reveals a perfect knowledge of Ribera's naturalism and Neapolitan trends, and who is attributed with a painting that repeats the same composition. 156 x 105 cm.
