This painting is a good example of the success of the religious compositions by the Flemish painter Gerard Seghers, which were widely disseminated in Spain through engravings and prints. In this particular case, the work of Paulus Pontius made possible the proliferation of images with this iconography in which Saint Sebastian, after being martyred by arrows, is comforted by an angel who carefully removes them from his body.
