Description

STRASBOURG CIRCA 1680 - 1700 Silver binding/shell entirely engraved on the covers, clasps, corners and plates. Scrolls of foliage, interlacing and foliage frame a baluster vase with roses, lilies, tulips and anemones in a tapered frame decorated with flowers in full bloom and fleur-de-lis at the corners. The openwork clasps are engraved with foliage and on the reverse the letters M.S.T for one and B.A.H for the second. This binding protects a Lutheran hymnbook: "New collection of old and new songs collected with all diligence and containing beautiful and spiritual songs, which with the approval [of the council? - illegible] of the Church, and according to the orders of the guardians invested by the High Authority of the Church of the City of Strasbourg, will be sung publicly at the divine service of the Evangelical Church of the said city. In Strasbourg, is at Johannes Beck's, near the cemetery of the Preacher. 1700". A view of Strasbourg is inserted in the frontispiece. Marked: no master goldsmith's mark Condition : poor condition of the book, small accident on one of the plates raised at a corner. Gross weight: 372.9 g - height: 13.3 cm - width: 8.8 cm Book consulted: Two centuries of goldsmithing in Strasbourg. Catalogue of the Museum of Decorative Arts of Strasbourg 2014. This type of binding from the late 17th century is rare. The Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Strasbourg holds thirteen of them, dated to the 18th century.
