STRASBOURG CIRCA 1680 - 1700 Silver binding/shell entirely engraved on the covers, clasps, corners and plates. Scrolls of foliage, interlacing and foliage frame a baluster vase with roses, lilies, tulips and anemones in a tapered frame decorated with flowers in full bloom and fleur-de-lis at the corners. The openwork clasps are engraved with foliage and on the reverse the letters M.S.T for one and B.A.H for the second. This binding protects a Lutheran hymnbook: "New collection of old and new songs collected with all diligence and containing beautiful and spiritual songs, which with the approval [of the council? - illegible] of the Church, and according to the orders of the guardians invested by the High Authority of the Church of the City of Strasbourg, will be sung publicly at the divine service of the Evangelical Church of the said city.
