A 'BLANC DE CHINE' PORCELAIN GUANYIN ON THRONE WITH CHILD AND ATTENDANTS China, Kangxi period The deity seated on a base simulating a rock, in her arms a child, wearing a large robe with a cloak on her head, the forehead with a showy tiara, at her feet the two attendants Shancai and Longnu, between whom a dragon. 38 cm high Provenance: Italian private collection. The iconography of this sculpture is already testified in Dehua production around the mid 17th century. In the variant of the deity without the child in her arms, it is in fact illustrated in a corner of the map of China contained in the 1667 edition of the Nieuw Atlas by Willem and Joan Blaeuw, published for the first time in 1655 on the model of the atlas of the Jesuit Martino Martini of 1651.
