Description
Mask Dan/Mano people Ivory Coast/Liberia Wood with dark patina H. 27 cm Provenance : Collected in situ by Mr. Begué between 1931 and 1935 This mask, whose narrow slit eyes would represent a female entity, shows a certain delicacy of sculpture, notably with its fine nose and its mouth that ends in a slight "bird's beak" giving the face an almost smiling pout. The beautiful dark patina shapes the whole in a harmonious way. Despite the slight lack of eyelids, the construction is perfectly balanced thanks to the ears, rarely represented except in this border region between the Dan and Mano populations, who have made them their trademark. The surface on the back confirms the use and age of this mask.
