Aelbert Cuyp (1620-1691) Two Cows Black stone, grey wash, framing lines in pen and black ink 13.5 x 18.5 cm. Characteristic of Cuyp's animal studies in technique and style, this drawing may be compared in particular to a Study of a Reclining Cow in a private collection and a Study of a Standing Cow now in the British Museum, both executed around 1645-1650 (cat. exp. Washington, National Gallery of Art and other venues, 2001-2002, nos. 101 and 103). The cow on the left of the present drawing is found without much change in a painting in the National Gallery in London, Herd near Dordrecht, dating from the late 1640s (S. Reiss, Aelbert Cuyp, London, 1975, no. 79).
