Christ after the flagellation Canvas. Unframed. 113 x 128 cm Provenance: Anonymous sale, Basel, Beurret and Bailly, 24 March 2021 (Louis Finson 2,700 ?). The scene in our painting is rarely represented in the passion cycle. It is situated between the Flagellation and the crowning of the thorns, and shows Christ detached from the column, crawling to pick up his clothes. The work draws its expressive force from the sobriety of the composition and the modesty of the emotions. Christ is projected in the foreground, close to the viewer's space to better challenge him.
