Description

"Paradise of the Infant Jesus" Under a blown glass globe, a wax sculpture, in a painted cardboard frame, artificial plants and moss. Napoleon III period. Height. 45 cm. Long. 33 cm. Depth 18 cm. "The devotion to the Infant Jesus developed essentially in the 17th century and particularly with Saint Teresa of Avila who had a particular devotion to the Infant Jesus. A wax statuette of the Child Jesus, which had belonged to her, was given to the Carmelites of Prague: it is the Child Jesus of Prague. At the same time, the use of cribs spread, first in Italy (for example, Neapolitan cribs). Wax Jesus of the 19th century, element of the Christmas crib, remain in small number in Corrèze (Peyrelevade, Curemonte, ...). This child Jesus under a globe is related to the wax Jesus of the Carmelite monasteries: Teresa of Avila gave to each monastery founded a wax statuette of the Child because he was the founder of each monastery. He can take on a different attitude: as heir to the kingdom, as a pilgrim, as a shepherd, as the little one of the Passion. This figurine could be a production of a carmel of the 19th century. To date, no wax Jesus is protected as a historical monument in France, although a number have been identified by the Inventory."
