Description

A small painted enamel ewer. Canton. 18th century Of hexagonal shape with indented corners, a thin spout, a stiff handle and a small domed lid, painted in the colours of famille rose with a continuing landscape with four "Western barbarians" drinking wine and being served by a putto and various borders of black scrolls on a blue ground and pink scroll on an almost white ground. Several smaller chips and restorations. Height 13.4 cm Provenance Private collection, Hesse, from the estate of the founding family of Farbwerke Hoechst, assembled in the first half of the 20th century Literature Cf.: Chinese Painted Enamel, Oxford 1978, p. 61, no. 70
