From building monuments celebrating the Palestinian people, to circulating prints depicting the lives and struggles of refugees, to other projects, he has helped shape a new Palestinian identity. Deeply influenced by his artistic training in East Germany, Abdi is also one of the first artists to incorporate Western influences and techniques into his work. Between figurative and abstract, his paintings reflect his political and social convictions. As he explains, "art must be engaged and play a role". Abed Abdi and his family had to leave Haifa in 1948 and sought refuge in Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon and Syria for three years. His childhood, very marked by this life confronts him with the destiny of people living in this status and these paintings take up his memories that still haunt him today.
