Description

Bronze statuette representing the Modest Venus. Her attitude and gesture, with her left hand hiding her bait, are similar to the Venus de Medici (a life-size marble sculpture from the 1st century B.C. probably made in Athens from an original Greek bronze of the type of Aphrodite of Knidos, which would have been made by a pupil of Praxiteles. It differs in that the goddess hides her sex with her left hand and her breasts with her right hand, hence her nickname Venus pudica. She is depicted standing, leaning on her left leg, with her right leg slightly bent backwards, naked, wearing a diadem with five protuberances, with her hair combed into large strands and pulled back into a bun at the nape of her neck. The face is rounded, the features fine, and the eyes wide open with well-marked pupils. The ears are pierced and should be wearing earrings. The breasts are small, the buttocks chubby. Roman period, c. 1st-2nd century AD H. 15.5 cm Provenance: acquired on the art market at the Galerie Georges Moreau, in December 1976 (certificate of authenticity attached) 15/01/77 in Toulouse.
