The Concert in the Bagpipe: Allegory of the Five Senses Parqueted oak panel 93 x 71 cm (missing and cracked panel) Reproduced from the right-hand side of the panel in the Catharijneconvent in Utrecht. This depicts the struggle between excess and moderation intimately linked with Carnival and the youthful period of Lent that precedes it. In a colossal bagpipe, a man gives rhythm to the composition with the sound of his lute surrounded by several other characters personifying madness. The Utrecht painting is generally dated around 1580, our painting is slightly later.
