A French painter and enameller, Alfred MEYER (1832-1904) won awards for his numerous participations in the Universal and International Exhibitions of the second half of the 19th century. After making a name for himself in the fields of decorative arts and painting, he was called upon by leading innovative jewelry houses - such as Baugrand, Boucheron, Falize, Froment-Meurice, Sandoz and Vever - to integrate his enamels into their jewelry creations. Inspired by the Renaissance and cameo art, his grisaille creations are particularly noteworthy. Recognized as an expert in the art of enameling, he was also a teacher at the Ecole Bernard Palissy, and in 1895 published L'Art de l'émail de Limoges ancien et moderne.
