Coran copié par Hajiûn ‘Ali de la famille de Yusuf Al-rajî

Eastern Europe, dated 1290H. (=1872) An Arabic manuscript of 700 leaves on paper, calligraphed in broad black "naskh" on ten lines per page, decorated with six illuminated pages, framing fillets in red and blue, separating verses in the form of blue and red flowers alternating with green and red ones. The titles are inscribed in long cartouches with marginal illumination. The Juz are marked in the margins by a crescent between two circles. The 'Ashirats and khamisats are indicated by various pastilles. The first frontispiece is inscribed in ornamental thuluth: "Tanzil min rab al-A'lamin / for the benefit of believers". The second double frontispiece illuminates Sura al-Fatiha and Sura al-Baqara. The third double frontispiece, f.359b360a, in the middle of the Qur'an, gives the name of the calligrapher. Dated on the colophon: 1290 = 1872 Colophon: Ana al-Katib Hajiûn 'Ali min al-Yusuf Al-ra'jî, sana 1290 I am the calligrapher Ḥajiûn 'Ali from the family of Yusuf Al-ra'jî Brown morocco flap binding with brass clasp. 34 x 22 cm A very nice illuminated Quran, Eastern Europe, signed Ḥajiūn 'Ali from Yusuf Al-ra'jî's family, and dated 1290AH/1872AD. Arabic manuscript on cream paper, 700ff, 10ll. in bold black naskh, 6 illuminated double pages, polychrome verse markers, headings in purple or green on a bed of scrolling vine, within polychrome cartouches issuing palmettes filled with arabesque into the margins. Signed on the 3rd illuminated frontispiece. Translation: I am the writer Ḥajiūn 'Ali from the family of Yusuf Al-ra'jī F. 700v: The copyist ended the invocation with the mention of the date of execution of this Holy Qur'an in 1290H.
