A Quran double page enhanced with gold, Persia, late 14th-early 15th century
On paper, 7ll. Of black Muhaqqaq lined in gold.
This double page is from a Qur'an of excellent quality, commissioned by an important personage. Indeed, the quality of the muhaqqaq and its gold outline reveal a long and costly work, carried out at the request of a wealthy patron. Abu Muhammad Abdul Qayyum ibn Muhammad ibn Karamshah-I Tabrizi produced the most majestic example of this technique in the manuscript known as "The Five Suras" (cf. A. Soudavar, "Art of the Persian Courts", New York, 1992, pp.50-51).
