Cornelis Bloemaert - Adoration of the shepherds -Girolamo de Treviso / Description: Adoration of the shepherds, with at centre the Virgin reclining beside Christ, who lies in the manger, on the left the shepherds worshipping Him, on the right St Joseph, seated, and musician angels; after a composition formerly attributed to Raphael, now to Girolamo da Treviso. : 'Raphael Urbinas / Pinxit' and below image, with dedication to Ferdinand III by Giovanni Battista Franceschi, and production detail: 'Cornelius Bloemaert sculpsit Romae superioru licentia / cum privil. S. C. M. et Regis Christ.mi'. Provenance Prince Beloselsku, see below. / Dimensions: 45,00 x 49,60 cm Good impression of this exceptional large print, here complete with text line and trimmed on plate border visible all around the image. Closed tear on the pillar along the right margin. Small paper defects in text line, flattened middle fold, trimmed a couple of mm in the text line at the bottom. Pasted on a larger collection sheet for support as it is difficult to keep prints of this size in good condition. (see the one in British Museum who is equal but in slightly less condition (Museum number V,4.66) / Literature: Hollstein / Dutch and Flemish etchings, engravings and woodcuts c.1450-1700 (27.II) --- Engraved after a painting now attributed to Girolamo da Treviso in the Christ Church Picture Gallery, Oxford. The plate is also described in G.B. Pezzini, S. Mazzari and S. Prosperi Valenti Rodinò, 'Raphael Invenit, stampe da Raffaello nelle collezioni dell'Istituto Nazionale per la Grafica', Rome, 1985, p.182; in the catalogue, the painting is attributed to Schiavone.The dating of the engraving based on the info by Tomas Sioda dating the print based on the dedicatory inscription between 1649, the year of the marriage of Ferdinand III's daughter Mariana, and the death of the Emperor Ferdinand in 1657.
