Jacques Callot (1592-1635) - The Carrying of the Cross - First state / Description: Carrying of the Cross, with St Veronica presenting a cloth to Christ, who has collapsed under the weight of the cross; several soldiers follow him; in the foreground, on the right, Virgin, St John and Holy women; the scene is set at the bottom of Mount Golgotha. Etching with some engraving. First state on three, before the rework and added false guide lines for the text who intended to do believe they where first states, these lines are visible in second and third state, not in the first state like this one. The third state has also altered text. On paper with double C watermark as called for in the first state (cfr. Lieure) From an unfinished series of seven on twelve etchings representing the Passion of Christ; the design was made by Callot in Florence and some plates include existing Italian buildings. / Dimensions: 11,50 x 21,60 cm With plate border and good margins.
