Nuremberg Chronicle 1493 - Views of Spain and England / Description: Anglia Fo (Town in England) Hispania (town in Spain).Nuremberg, 12 July 1493. Folium CCLXXXVIIII . Text page in Latin on recto a hill-side city in England with a series of gates leading up to a citadel. It is one of two woodcuts used for England in the work. On the verso is a view of a Spanish town. The views are fantasy but the earliest obtainable views. Page from the richest illustrated Incunabula, the famous: Nuremberg Chronicle, published the year that Columbus returned to Europe after discovering America. The woodblock cutters were Michael Wohlgemuth, the well-known teacher of Albrecht Durer, and his stepson Wilhelm Pleydenwurff. Wohlgemuth was Albrecht Durer's tutor between 1486-90 and recent scholarship has shown, Albrecht Durer may also have collaborated, since some of the cuts bear a remarkably close resemblance to the Apocalypse illustrations. The printing was carried out under the supervision of the great scholar-printer Anton Koberger, whose printing were famous throughout Europe / Dimensions: 42,00 x 27,00 cm Excellent impression in good condition with some minor marginal staining. / Literature: Shirley, 6a.2.
