LOUIS XVI for SWITZERLAND Shield with laurels countermarked for the canton of Berne 40 Batzen (1813-1819). (29,38 g) Rare. T.B. The enormous quantity of coins of Louis XV, Louis XVI and of the the revolutionary period which circulated at the beginning of the XIXth century gave rise to continuous difficulties in the commercial commercial transactions because of the wear of many of these of these coins. The governments of the canton of Berne and the canton of Vaud took measures to avoid losses to traders and the population. They countermarked the coins with an authorised value of 40 Batzen or 39 Batzen. About 660,000 ecus were counter-marked but most of them were were remelted to recover the good money.
