Description

Saint Longin in carved, polychromed and gilded limewood, with a partially closed back. Standing with his right leg forward, he was holding a spear with both hands, which has now disappeared; helmeted, he is clad in antique-style armour; his face is lowered, his eyes are large and his moustache is raised. Germany or Italy, first third of the 17th century Height: 116.5 cm (damage to the polychromy and gilding, minor restorations) This large centurion figure was probably part of an important group depicting the Crucifixion. Charged with ensuring the death of Jesus, he pierced the Saviour's side with his spear, thus giving him salvation. Theologians recognize him as the first of the Gentiles to proclaim the divine mission of Christ. He was thus canonized and became the protector of the knights.
