Buttenman drinking cup made of carved fruitwood, ebony? for the eyes and silver. The grape picker is standing with a large hood on his back, leaning on a stick, a dog sitting at his feet; he is wearing shoes and a hat, and is wearing a short tunic over puffy, gadrooned breeches. Silver lined and banded hood, silver hat and stocking band, silver shoe buckles and dog collar, silver studded staff and breeches; rectangular molded and paneled base. Rhineland region or Switzerland, 17th century Height: 22.7 cm Collector's label below the terrace Provenance: former collection, Vienna (Austria) (small accidents and missing parts) Cup of grape-gatherers' guilds, the "buttenman", was used at celebratory dinners. It was used in the Rhine valley until Alsace and in Switzerland. Rare on the market, they are attractive by their picturesque aspect.
