Rare ivory knife handle carved in the round, representing a young woman with a crown in her hands, a female orante at her feet. She is dressed in a long dress with a fitted leotard, rectangular neckline, closed with a row of buttons on the front; vertical folds falling to the ground; her long hair is tied in a knot at the neck, coming down in three wavy strands at the back; molded base. Italy, Venice? end of 14th century Length: 9.5 cm Plinth (visible missing) These long rows of buttons on the front of the clothes can be seen on some bone plates of boxes attributed to the so-called a figure inchiodate workshop (with nailed figures) dating from the last third of the 14th century and which is thought to have been made in Florence.
