Description

Little Virgin and Child in ivory carved in the round. Seated on a moulded throne-bench, she carries her Son on her knees; in a gesture of tenderness, he holds in one hand a piece of his Mother's veil and puts his other hand on her shoulder; Mary is dressed in a half-length veil, a girdled dress and a cloak that comes back to the front of her knees forming "beak" folds. Cologne? second quarter of the 14th century Height: 5,6 cm - Weight: 28 g (very slight accident) This miniature Virgin is a real reduction of the seated Virgins of the 14th century whose usual sizes oscillate between 10 and 30 cm. In spite of its reduced size, the proportions, attitudes, facial features and drapery of the larger statuettes are still present. There are less than half a dozen 14th century Virgins with Child smaller than 7 cm in the Courtauld Institute's Gothic Ivories database, which makes this small Virgin a particularly rare piece.
