Description

Portable altar in the form of a polyptych in polychrome wood and gilded scrolls with Saint Peter and Saint Paul, Saint Catherine and Saint Margaret. The inner flaps painted with the Annunciation. Southern European work, probably Italy, 18th-19th century Oil on panel and gilding 58 x 80.5 x 11 cm (accidents, restorations, missing parts) Designed for private devotion, this finely painted and decorated altar must certainly have contained in its interior another work of art, a painting or a carved wooden panel depicting an image related to Christ, probably the veil of Veronica. Despite the fact that this object has been reworked several times over the years, the imposing figures of St. Peter and St. Paul from the classical post-Raphaelesque repertoire are particularly noteworthy.
