French Surgery. Collected from the Old Doctors and Surgeons. With several figures of the Instruments necessary for the Manual operation. Paris, Nicolas Gilles, 1594. In-folio, half calf spotted with vellum corners, spine decorated (Modern binding in the old taste). Garrison-Morton, n°3669. First edition of one of the rarest and most important treatises on surgery of the Renaissance, by Jacques Guillemeau (1550-1613), disciple of Ambroise Paré and ordinary surgeon of Charles IX, then of Henri III, Henri IV and Louis XIII. Remarkable copper-engraved illustration, including a title-frontispiece decorated with 6 impressive operative scenes, and 13 plates included in the pagination representing flaying, surgical instruments, the glossocome and operations (that of the harelip and dry suture). The treatise on surgical operations is original. It is Paré analyzed, fortified with new proofs, rectified in some procedures, finally made more precise and methodical (Dezeimeris). Old handwritten bookplate on the frontispiece: Paulus Clerget. Manuscript bookplate at the bottom of p. 121: A moy Louis Demongeot chirurgien 1633. Washed copy, restorations to some leaves and engravings. Tear without missing on the edge of leaf H3.
