An American photographer, he studied at the Eastman School of Photography in Rochester, New York. He became a photographer with the Air Force in the Pacific during the Second World War. He then spent four years as a press agent for the Ringling Brothers Circus and worked at the Pacific Theater. He joined the staff of Life from 1947 to 1972. He is also a photojournalist and covers several international events.
