Theude GRÖNLAND (1817-1876)

Still life with fruit in a landscape, 1860 Oil on canvas, lined, signed and dated lower left. Provenance : Collection of the Prince of Lichtenstein Size: 60 x 80 cm German-Danish painter of flowers and still lifes born in Altona in the Duchy of Holstein, also a decorator, Grönland was trained at the Royal Danish Academy of Arts in Copenhagen. He started as a portraitist in Antwerp in 1840 and then in Paris in 1842 before arriving in Italy where he built up a solid reputation in the representation of still lifes. Back in France, he joined the Barbizon artists' colony from 1859 to 1868 and it was shortly before his death that he painted the dining room of Franz Hubert von Tiele-Winckler in his palace in Hitzigalle, Berlin.
