Portrait of Valentine Delessert Pastel and white highlights on black pencil lines. Signed and dated lower left in red chalk Amaury Duval 1849. Accidents, insolate. 65 x 48,5 cm Provenance: Anonymous sale, Paris, Sotheby's, 8 December 2003, n°34, reproduced. Valentine de Laborde (1806-1894), was born into a family of politicians and financiers. In 1824 she married Gabriel Delessert, banker and prefect. She is famous for having been the mistress of Prosper Mérimée and Maxime Du Camp. She held a literary Salon where Musset, Delacroix, Chateaubriand were crowded. She had a great influence at the court of Napoleon III.
