Stendhal's first novel.
It was only in 1827, at the age of forty-four, that
Stendhal produced a first novel, his eighth work.
A cruel portrayal of Parisian high society under the Restoration, it was sharply criticized by many of the author's friends: the anonymous publication was a failure. In 1828, the publisher had new titles printed in order to clear the unsold stock.
A rare copy preserved in paperback, with full margins.
