Description

[Henri Beyle, dit STENDHAL].

Armance, ou Quelques scènes d'un salon de Paris en 1827. Paris, Urbain Canel, 1827. 3 volumes in-12 of (2) ff, VIII, 177 pp.; (2) ff, 191 pp.; (2) ff, 243 pp. In soft blue half-maroquin folders lined with blue suede, slipcase. First edition: a first issue copy. It is printed on fine laid paper. Stendhal's first novel. It was only in 1827, at the age of forty-four, that Stendhal produced a first novel, his eighth work. A cruel portrayal of Parisian high society under the Restoration, it was sharply criticized by many of the author's friends: the anonymous publication was a failure. In 1828, the publisher had new titles printed in order to clear the unsold stock. A rare copy preserved in paperback, with full margins.
