Jules RENARD.

Poil de Carotte. Paris, Ernest Flammarion, no date [1894]. In-12: brick half-maroquin with corners, smooth spine decorated throughout, untrimmed, gilt head, covers preserved (V. Champs). First edition. One of only 15 copies on Hollande laid paper (no. 13), the only large paper. A fine copy in a signed contemporary binding. From the libraries of André Lefebvre (cat. III, 1966, no. 584), Roger Hild (1980, no. 293) and Louis de Sadeleer, with bookplate. Spine slightly faded. Three signed autograph notes have been mounted at the head of the book. In one, Jules Renard thanks a journalist for his article; in the other, addressed to Séverine, the novelist offers a copy of Poil de carotte (probably a large paper) that she could resell at a profit, and in the last one, addressed on May 13, 1904, Renard declares: "Bad luck! I am still in the country, where I have just attended the elections in my village. I am elected. But what violence and what stupidity! Carrot hair has not wasted its days. [...]"
