Alfred de MUSSET.

Un spectacle dans un fauteuil. Paris, Eugène Renduel [then: Paris, La Revue des Deux Mondes, London, Baillière], 1833-1834. 3 volumes in-8: green half-basin in the Bradel style, smooth spines threaded with gold, not trimmed (period binding). Original editions: the series is complete with three volumes, the first containing the verse pieces, the next two the prose. The show to which the reader is invited contains, for the verse part: La Coupe et les lèvres.- À quoi rêvent les jeunes filles.- Namouna. The two volumes in prose contain: Lorenzaccio, Les Caprices de Marianne, Fragments du livre XV des chroniques Florentines, André del Sarto, Fanfario, On ne badine pas avec l'amour and La Nuit vénitienne. "The second issue of Un spectacle dans un fauteuil reveals the dramatic genius of Musset. [...] By not conceiving the plays in his collection for the stage, Musset resolutely turned his back on the experiments in Romantic drama which, despite Dumas and Hugo, lead to dead ends. By ridding himself of the clichés and antithesis of melodrama, by favouring the truth of feelings over dramatic effect, he has demonstrated the possibility of a truly romantic theatre" (L. Chotard). A good copy, untrimmed, in contemporary binding. Spines slightly faded. (Bibliothèque nationale, En français dans le texte, 1990, nº 249: notice de L. Chotard.- Clouzot, p. 215: "Ensemble fort rare, les deux derniers volumes, de prose, ayant été partiellement détruits.")
