Divagations. Paris, Eugène Fasquelle, 1897. In-12 of (2) ff. and 378 pp.: fawn morocco, spine ribbed with cold filets, multiple cold filets framing the boards, emerald green morocco lining with gilt fillet, caramel silk endpapers, gilt edges, cover and spine preserved, case (Semet et Plumelle). First edition. One of 15 copies on Hollande laid paper (no. 6), the only large paper after 5 japon. The last work published by the poet, the collection gathers prose poems, critical essays and occasional writings published in magazines during nearly thirty years. It deals with the most diverse subjects: Richard Wagner, the Theatre, portraits of Villiers de l'Isle-Adam, Verlaine, Rimbaud, Manet, etc. As for the Book, it offers the oft-quoted aphorism: "...everything in the world exists in order to lead to a book." A fine copy. Upper spine cracked.
