Description

Dimitry Dimitrievich KOUZNETSOV (1852-1924).

Naked woman (1893). Oil on canvas, signed and dated lower left "Dimitry Kouznetsoff. 93". Restorations. H. 100 x W. 200 cm (approx.). Provenance Collection of the Russian singer and dancer Maria Nikolaevna Kouznetsova (1880-1966), niece of the artist. It has since been preserved in her descendants. History Like his older brother, Nikolai Dmitrievich Kuznetsov, Dimitri Dimitrievich was born in the village of Stepanovka into a family of large landowners in the Odessa region in 1852. From 1871 to 1876, he studied at the natural department of the mathematics faculty of the Novorossiysk University of Odessa, then he became a member of TYURH (The Association of Russian Artists of the South) and took part in numerous exhibitions from 1891 to 1903. In the 1890s, he moved to Paris where he exhibited at the Salon de la Société nationale des Beaux-Arts in 1891 and 1893 at the Palais des Champs Élysées. Dimitri's production is less known than that of his brother Nikolai. The dispersal of the collection of his niece, Maria Nikolevna Kouznetsova, has made it possible to lift the veil on some of the artist's major works, which were of obvious quality and hitherto forgotten. Some of his paintings are Salon paintings, exhibited at the "National" (Salon of the National Society of Fine Arts), perfectly accomplished and of breathtaking grandeur.
