Description

Ornement cérémoniel (pectoral)

worn by a lord-priest during the great ceremonies that punctuated the magic-religious life of the clan. It shows the lord standing with his arms raised towards the sky as a sign of appeal to the rain or solar forces. He wears a necklace made up of several pendants evoking the shapes of his totem animal, the owl. A visored crown covers his head, tambas adorn his ears and a nasal ornament indicates the important status of this character. His body, covered with a poncho that falls to his knees, is adorned with several removable pendants intended to reflect the sunlight and thus enhance the divine prestige of this character among his people. Hammered, cut, pierced, stapled and punched gold. Mochica, Peru, 100 to 500 AD 14 x 13.5 cm Provenance : Besch, Cannes, sale of July 17, 2011, lot n° 234 of the catalogue.
