Description

*Hache cérémonielle

representing the profile of a bird with a crest and hooked beak The animal, carved in profile, is recognizable by its imposing herringbone crest and hooked beak. Its eye is represented by a round depression that may have originally contained a shell, obsidian or pyrite inlay for decorative purposes. Above it is a double scroll showing a strong arch of the eyebrow. At the back, there is a shallow circular recess. The beak is topped by a prominent nostril. The arc of the mandibles is indicated by a furrow, ending in a small hollow at the commissures. An oblique recess at the back of the work forms the tenon, serving to embed the object in an architectural structure adjoining the ball field, with which the hachas are associated. The black marks are residues of natural tar, commonly known as chapopote. Brown andesite with traces of petroleum bitumen Veracruz - Mexico, 100 - 300 AD.
