*Personnage debout

representing a shaman dressed in a long loincloth held in place by a belt. The arms are slightly spread out and fall along the body, the hands open, the thumbs resting on the index fingers. He is adorned with a large collar-shaped necklace bordered by a fine groove and large earrings with a central ornament. He wears a mouth mask in the shape of a monkey's mouth, a protective animal, whose corners of the mouth are perforated and rounded. The eyes are in the shape of a tapered almond. The well-designed ears are protruding. The head is enhanced by a wide headband decorated with a circular loop with a central ornament. Two fine grooves border the headband. There are firing holes behind the sculpture. Brown-beige hollow clay. Veracruz - Mexico, 700 - 900 AD. 82.2 x 39.8 x 18.6 cm The position and attitude of this shaman give the impression of elevation and lightness. It is part of a set of objects used in a ceremonial context linked to the shamanic cult symbolizing the spirit of the protective animal.
