Ceremonial sceptre representing the profile of the god K with several stylized and serrated excrescences. The god K "k'awiil" personifies the force that allows magic, transformation, and transcendence, in the ritual practices of the Maya. He is closely linked to the snake symbolized by lightning, thunder and storm. This deity is a mediator between the physical world and the supernatural world. He is one of the main deities of the Mayan pantheon.
Brown-beige flint
Maya - Mexico, 550 - 950 AD
16 x 5.6 x 0.6 cm
Lot presented in Temporary Importation
This singular work is one of the most original forms of Maya art. While the cutting of flint and obsidian is known in other cultures, notably Teotihuacan, Maya creations are fascinating for their complexity and elegance.
They reveal the dexterity of the artists of this great civilization who brought this technique to its highest degree of perfection, working these hard and precious rocks with infinite meticulousness, by percussion, according to ancestral processes used for the manufacture of tools and weapons.
