*Sculpture anthropomorphe

representing a standing character. The body is stylized. The legs are free and slightly bent. The folds of the groin are marked and the sex is apparent. The arms are stretched along the chest, the shoulders are wide and rounded. The oval head is realistically modelled. The mouth with its fleshy lips is open, revealing the upper gum line. The aquiline nose has well defined wings. The oblong eyes are deeply sunken and left raw. The rectangular left ear is prominent. The right ear and the top of the head have been ritually broken. Spotted green serpentine. Restored left arm Late Olmec - Early Teotihuacan - Guerrero - Mexico 400 - 100 BC. J.-C. 22 x 10,3 x 5,6 cm This figure combines the stylized features of the Guerrero cultures with the more realistic features of the Olmec civilization. This transitional work heralds an evolution towards the art that would develop in Teotihuacan. Provenance: - Former Samuel Dubiner collection since the 1950s. - Mermoz Gallery, 2009
