representing a standing man. He is wearing a headdress with a red painted crest in the centre. At the back of the head, there is a bun from which a lock of hair escapes. The face is oval. The trapezoidal mouth is half-open; the corners of the mouth are drooping. The almond-shaped eyes are animated by the presence of pupils formed by two small circles. The straight nose is fine. The pectoral muscles are prominent. The arms and legs are set wide apart from the body. The fingers of the hands and feet are signified by fine grooves. The slim waist is accentuated by wide hips. At the back, the buttocks are finely modelled in relief. Brown clay with a thin layer of kaolin. Perfect state of preservation Olmec, Mexico, 1150-900 B.C. 20.2 x 11.5 x 5.5 cm This sculpture is remarkable for the finesse and realism of its features. The delicate modelling and the intense expression also testify to a perfect technical mastery and make this figure a fine example of Olmec art.
