"Dancing, in fact, inspired the painter, but here again, when he depicts dancers, they are either timeless women or contemporary avant-garde dancers: they are not genre scenes "à la Degas". Auburtin was an admirer of Isadora Duncan and it was the students of this great and innovative choreographer who interested him. Isadora drew on the repertoire of certain representations visible on Greek vases and she organized the movements of her dancers according to symmetrical and sculptural rhythms that were supposed to take up the principle of ancient eurythmy, a symbol of balance and harmony. This type of choreography, far removed from the codes of romantic ballet, evokes both an ideal ancient world and a fusion with nature. The idea can be found in a number of experiments of the period, which are characterised by open-air dancing, bare feet, and a singular gesture.
