Description

MARIËN, Marcel Notebook. C. 1946-55 16.5 x 10 cm : [53] ff, graph paper. Black moleskin (min. traces of use). In black or blue ink or red ballpoint pen, unevenly filled, with some pages bearing only a few notes, sometimes head to tail, 2 ff. partially and neatly cut out. Dated from the post-war years, with an allusion to the "iron curtain" (post 1946) and another to a work by Paul Nougé "Le jeu des mots et du hasard" (1955). Interesting notebook discovering the multiple and varied interests of Mariën in these years: aphorisms ("escaping this road that leads us unexpectedly to death"), word games, fragments of poems or songs ("Operetta", featuring the Queen of England, André Malraux, the Pope and a sick man), word lists, of words, photos, tasks, addresses (including Freddy Buache in Lausanne, Naim Kattan in Baghdad, Henri de Lescoët in Nice, Malcolm de Chazal in Mauritius), bibliographical references, extracts from readings (including "Le voyage en Moscovie" by A. Olearius and "The Description of Moscow" by G. Le Cointe de Laveau), advertising diversions ("Death is sweet with Coca Cola"), etc.
