HUYSMANS, Joris-Karl À rebours. Paris Charpentier et Cie 1884 Pet. in-8° (small decreasing marginal stain on 1st ff., a few discreet marginal notes in pencil). Midnight blue half morocco with corners signed Weckesser, covers gilt-stamped, spine with 5 nerves (slight rubbing), boxes set with a double gilt fillet and decorated with small gilt irons and red mosaic flowers, t. gilt, little trimmed, yellow cover printed on board. Nice and fresh copy. First edition of this "breviary of decadence" (En français...), with which Huysmans broke with the ambient naturalism and the atmosphere of his early works (he had been part of the Médan group led by Zola). Ex. on publisher's paper, the large papers having been limited to 12. Beautiful mosaic spine by Jacques Weckesser, one of the masters of Belgian bookbinding in the late 19th century. Ref.
