Description

Jules Oury dit Marcel-Lenoir (Montauban 1872 - Montricoux 1931)

Quercy landscape in the shelter of the war, 1918 Pastel, gouache and black ink on paper 21,5 x 34,5 cm Signed and dated lower right Marcel-Lenoir 1918 We thank Mrs Marie Ange Namy for confirming the authenticity of this work. Marcel-Lenoir executed this landscape dated in 1918. During his convalescence, he was discharged for health reasons and took refuge in his native region, in the town of Bruniquel, close to Montricoux, where he was sheltered from the war and continued to work. For economic reasons, he was anxious to preserve his paintings for his Parisian studio, but he still enjoyed painting landscapes in pastel. Here, we can see a grandiose panoramic view of the Quercy region, where we can recognize the villages at the bottom of the hills and the high buildings with their red and orange tiled roofs. The pastellist makes some highlights with white chalk. He inscribes his landscape in a grandiloquent cubist aesthetic, which imposes itself on the artist in his third and last period, which begins during the war and continues during the post-war years.
