Madagascar - CAZENEUVE (Marius). The Court of Madagascar. Magic and Diplomacy. Paris, Delagrave, 1896. In-12 half-brown basane, cold-stamped ribbed spine, gilt title (period binding). Minor wear. Frontispiece portrait of the author. Slight scattered brown spots. Toulouse-born Marius Cazenave (1839-1913) (who calls himself "physician and intimate adviser to the Queen of Madagascar Ranavalo Manjaka" in the title of this edition) was a world-famous magician, science enthusiast and adventurer. He arrived in Madagascar in 1886 with the unstated aim of promoting French interests against the British. He managed to become an intimate of Queen Ranavalona III and, using unusual methods that often involved prestidigitation, obtained the cancellation of an important treaty between Great Britain and Madagascar.
