17th century ITALIAN COLLECTION AFTER THE ANTIQUE Portrait of pseudo-Vitellius, after the antique bust from the Grimani collection in Venice White marble head H. : 19 cm on a veined marble base H. 12cm Minor wear and accidents The work is inspired by the only Roman copy discovered in 1505 during excavations directed by the Venetian cardinal Domenico Grimani (1461-1523) on the Quirinal in Rome. After the cardinal's death, the work was sent to Venice and exhibited in the Palazzo Ducale until 1593. Considered from the 16th century onwards to be the portrait of the emperor Vitellius, it was widely copied, notably to represent this emperor in a series of busts illustrating Suetonius' Life of the Twelve Caesars.
