TWO PANELS OF STITCH FABRICS Oudenaarde, Flanders Late 16th - early 17th century Needlework on canvas, with woolen threads on cotton foundations Two panels depicting the hunts of Charles V From the story of the lion hunts of Charles V (Charles of Habsburg, Charles V born 24/02/1500 in Ghent and died 21/09/1558), during the expedition to and the Conquest of Tunis in 1535 56 x 68 cm (good general condition, maintenance restorations) The first panel represents a lion on the left in the foreground and a character on the right preparing to kill it surrounding a basin from which a multitude of flowers sprang. Border with garlands of flowers, birds and fruits. Source: the court of the lions in Ghent from 1421 to 1641 (John Benjamins publishing Company), the lions of the princely menagerie between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance (taken from the history of the dukes of Burgundy). The second panel represents Charles V in the foreground hunting deer, surrounded by two figures including a rider on the right in a forest setting. A river in the center and in the background on the right, a castle in perspective.
