CIEZA DE LEON Pedro de (1518-1554)

Cronica del gran regno del Peru', con la descrittione di tutte le provincie, e costumi e riti, [...] Venetia, Per Francesco Lorenzini da Turino, 1560. In-12 (150 x 107 mm), [12]-[219] ff. ch. (incomplete with leaves 177 to 192), in Italian. Covered in green and orange dominoté paper. Typographical mark on title, woodcut and illustrated bands and initials. Numerous early handwritten marginal annotations, in Italian, throughout the text. Among the first explorers of South America, Pedro Cieza de Leon arrived in Peru around 1550. He was appointed that same year "Crònista de Indias" on behalf of the Spanish crown. RARE in spite of its incompleteness. REFERENCE Brunet, II, 67: "Rare work; it was supposed to have four books, but only the first one was published". PROVENANCE "C. Balmont. 1907"; stamp of a bookshop in Palma de Mallorca and handwritten mention in ink dated 1907; handwritten signature crossed out in ink on the title with mention "Genova. 1613" (Binding very damaged, first quires detached; 1 page of table partly torn, some wormholes with traces of old restorations, wetness on some leaves, brownings).
